    • In the census it says that George and Annie have had 5 children with 4 still living.

Annie's mother, Mary is living with the family. She is a widow, and had 9 children only 3 of which are still living. I wonder whether the 6 children who died did so as very young infants / stillborns as I have only found 3 children on the census' and they all survived.

    • In the 1918 London Electoral Register, George can be seen with Annie.

The qualification for Annie's right to vote is given as "HO" both at a parliamentary and at a local level. This means "Husbands Occupation"

The qualification for George's right to vote is given as "NM" at a parlimentary level and "O" at a local level. The NM stands for "Naval Military" which means he was either serving in the Navy or the Military. The O stands for "Occupation". Next to his name is a small "a", which stands for absent. This confirms that George, in 1918 was serving in WWI.

Note: On this register George's name is given as George William Pithers (later registers record him as William George).

Also residing at 28 Silchester Terrace are John Eaton (also absent due to Naval/Military service), George Lewis (R/O) and Edward Linscott (R/O).

      On the one page covering numbers 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10 to 16, 18, 20 to 27, 29, 29a, 30, 31, Silchester Terrace there are 18 men absent due to Naval/Military service.

From Wikipedia: Representation of the People Act 1919 - The Representation of the People Act 1918 widened suffrage by abolishing practically all property qualifications for men and by enfranchising women over 30 who met minimum property qualifications. The enfranchisement of this latter group was accepted as recognition of the contribution made by women defence workers. However, women were still not politically equal to men (who could vote from the age of 21); full electoral equality wouldn't occur until the Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act 1928.
The terms of the act were:
All adult males gain the vote, as long as they are 21 years old or over and are resident in the constituency
Women over 30 years old receive the vote but they have to be either a member or married to a member of the Local Government Register
Some seats redistributed to industrial towns
Elections to be held on a decided day each year

    _PROOF proven
    Notes
    • I have not been able to find details of George's birth on the BMD index. There are no plausible 'Pithers' and I suspect the surname was misspelt at registration. In order to go back a further generation and confirm George's parents, I obtained first the death details (via BMD index) of William "Baby Bill" Pithers and from this obtained Bill's year of birth. I then searched the BMD for Bill's birth details and ordered his birth certificate from the National Statistics. Later I was able to find and obtain the birth certificate of Bill and George's sister - Beatrice Alexander Pithers. The parents on her certificate matched that of Bill's. Later still, the finding of George's death entry in the BMD confirms George's birth date. [2]
